This BC Yoga Retreat truly was a very powerful experience for me. I have been taking Yoga for several years and when I heard that this combination of Yoga and a Breast Cancer Survivors' Retreat was occurring at the Trinity Center, I was very excited!
I was able to get back into my Yoga 'flow' enabled by the beautiful and highly skilled Yoga instructors there. I felt more in harmony with my body than I had in months.
I found that I was in the company of Strong, Beautiful Women who take life head on, even in the face of adversity. These women are not used to a lot of special treatment or pampering. Several had small children. Many had fulltime jobs. Others had ongoing health issues that required more treatment. I learned that all of us were committed to living life one day at a time with our eyes wide open, appreciating the string of moments that each day brings. This Retreat gave us a time to share with women who had had our common experience of breast cancer and who had made their own way through it. I had never been in a group of BCS before and I was in awe of us. I felt like I had come into a lovely tree lined valley in a gorgeous countryside on a perfect day and spotted a small herd of beautiful, sleek yet powerful gazelle-like creatures drinking water from the crystal clear stream there. I slowly walked down closer to admire them in all of their quiet beauty and then, as I gazed at my reflection in the stream I realized I was one of them! Imagine my surprise, and excitement! I was so moved by their beauty and awestruck that I had found them!! Thank you, thank you for giving me this amazing gift!
You know, for a high energy person like me who doesn't like to miss anything, I know that I overextend myself and overdo it too much of the time. The few days we spent at the Retreat made my intention clearer-to get rid of the tension and stress that I create and be happy with the thought that I can do it for myself.
I realize now that I felt a tremendous sense of renewal and rebirth during those few days, and I allowed myself to feel and experience emotions that haven’t surfaced in a long time. Along with that, I felt the power of the women who participated, and I recognized their strength and will to live in order to take back their lives again. I felt so fortunate to be in the company of such fabulous individuals who shared, in their own way, a little bit of themselves.
I never imagined that so many blessings would come from a breast cancer diagnosis, but there have been many. This retreat, being introduced to yoga, and meeting these inspiring women are among the blessings I have received since being diagnosed. I am so grateful to have had the chance to be inspired by such a wonderful event.
I feel so fortunate to have been a part of the recent Yoga Retreat and wish to thank all involved from the Duke Cancer Patient Support. Having gone through a very stressful year from diagnosis through treatment, there has been little time for quiet reflection. The yoga retreat, being my first trip that wasn't cancer treatment related, allowed me to relax and just be.
The diverse group of women, who gathered for this event, was open,
compassionate and so brave to share their deepest feelings with the
other participants. As you know, having cancer can make you feel
isolated and very different from the rest of the world. It is so helpful
to meet others who have shared this common experience. I felt honored
to be a participant. Thank you for your support and generosity.
How I thank you for taking the initiative to offer the Yoga Retreat. I felt very privileged to have been a participant in this exciting event. I appreciate all that Jean, the Yoga instructors and all parties did to actualize this creative vision.
The yoga was a perfect focus to remind us and help us experience the value of good breathing patterns and physical stretching which facilitate relaxation and well being.
Jean's initial invitation for us each to be "intentional" enabled us to identify what we wanted and needed from the Retreat.
I especially liked the way she defined the parameters of the sharing that first night. Each person felt safe and the respect of one another's mental/emotional "space" was affirmed.
The overall effect of the days together was one of freeing and empowering. We gained strength in the energy of the group, the leaders and the process.
I send my very sincere thanks to all of you for making this opportunity available. I look forward to continuing the process next year.
Thank you so much for all your hard work in putting together the Yoga Retreat. I had a great time and came home feeling strong and refreshed.
I would like to thank Rachel for telling me about the retreat way back in May 2004, when I was finishing radiation. I wish Rachel could have been at the retreat. I know it would have made her happy to see all the survivors doing yoga and enjoying the beauty of Trinity Center.
I truly appreciate your commitment to helping survivors like myself get back to living our lives after cancer has robbed us of our sense of security. It means a lot to me and to my husband and two young daughters.
Thank you Rachel and Jean for being who you are and for caring about others so deeply.
I want to thank you for being part of your dream and it becoming my dream! It was a wonderful three days to connect with other survivors and share their energy. I feel very fulfilled and hope we can do this again.

I would like to thank you for being the fairy godmother of this wonderfully uplifting experience my fellow “warriors” and I had at the beach last week.
I don’t have to tell you how physically depleting the process of cancer can be. I also don’t have to tell you how spiritually gratifying are the lessons that we learn in the process.
The yoga retreat gave me and the other participants the priceless opportunity to consolidate and join our lessons and joys, and come through this experience richer and rejuvenated.
Please thank all the generous people who helped make this experience possible, and please thank again the wonderful staff at Duke Cancer Patient Support for their tireless work on this project.
Thank you so much for the opportunity and the means to attend the yoga retreat. It was such a powerful experience to be among other women with so much strength, beauty and wisdom. I am so grateful to have been a part of this very special group. I not only met wonderful new friends, but also wonderful yoga teachers that I can continue to learn with. This was the first time I had been away from home in over a year and I can't think of any better place to have gone. I definitely feel renewed, strengthened and forever bonded with the group. Thank you for your dream!
After I read your e-mail I loved the expression, I'm still floating. I used that line all day even today when everyone wants to hear about my “Yoga Retreat", I am already looking forward to the next one. It really helped me a lot to talk and listen to all the other ladies in the same situation as I was, to know you are not alone with your illness. To experience the pain of going through your first time of meeting up to all the different challenges of every day living. Your life, your family, even your closest friends around you will always be there to offer you support. It is wonderful to know that every day is followed by another, and to be in this world with the people that surround us with love, smiles, and blessings makes it a wonderful life.
To you and your staff I extend my sincerest Thank you for making my weekend so memorable that will last me a lifetime.
I hope to see you next year at Trinity Center and wish you all the continued success for our second annual Retreat.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time and energy to make the Yoga Retreat for Breast Cancer Survivors a reality. You and your committee members created a wonderfully supportive environment for healing and sharing. The yoga was a gentle way for people to get in better touch with their bodies and the availability of massage therapy was truly inspired. I left the retreat feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated.
There were many components that helped make the retreat so successful. The facility itself was a perfect setting for getting away from the daily routine. The individual instructors and therapists were an unusually upbeat and encouraging group of people. They were able to get us all to participate in activities that we might have avoided in our regular lives. Certainly the small, thoughtful touches, such as the gift bag with numerous useful items, helped to create a friendly and nurturing environment. And the advance planning, to which many hours must have been devoted, paid off in a retreat that seemed to run flawlessly. You had the ideal balance of structured time and free time and are to be commended for the sensitivity with which you anticipated the needs and wants of a diverse group of breast cancer survivors.
And then, of course, there were the women. They were a delightful group of individuals whom I'll never forget. You in particular stand out among them, Jean, with your determination to find a way to help other breast cancer survivors. I admire your ability to call upon your numerous contacts and friends to create this transforming event. It provided us with an opportunity to get together, share our experiences, and forge bonds that will help us move forward.
I consider the Retreat to be a complete success. Kudos go to you, your fellow committee members, and the many sponsors of this event. You are all to be commended.
Thank you again,
